Little Eaton Primary School

About Us

Foundation and Years 1 and 2

We feel that it is important that the youngest children are in the smallest classes that we can manage. The maximum planned class size for this age is 30. In 2011 there will be 4 classes in these age groups. There will be some classes with children from more than one school year group in order to keep class sizes down.

In smaller classes we feel that we are able to help the children to settle in well and to gain confidence in their learning and social development. The progress of each child is the responsibility of their class teacher, although children may work with a number of other teachers, teaching assistants and helpers during the school day.

Years 3,4,5 and 6

In 2011 there will be 4 classes in these age groups. There will be some mixed age groups to reduce overall class size and to make best use of staff and resources.

Children may at times be grouped for some activities with others from their year or beyond who are working at a similar level. As a result, Numeracy or Literacy groups may not always be the same as class groups.

Mixed age classes

Some classes have mixed ages in them, for example Year 1 and year 2 children in a class together. We find that children in these classes make good progress. Teachers address individual needs whatever the age of the children in their class. Sometimes children will work with different teachers and other adults to address more age specific needs.

Small Group work

We try to ensure that children will have the opportunity to work in small groups. These may be supported by an additional teacher or classroom assistant. They may be working with a parent or other helper in school. In each case the small groups help the children to develop their social understanding as well as to work at some special project or skill.
